Spring is for new beginnings. The first flowers bravely poke through the soil, trees begin to bud and bloom, birds return—there’s simply an energy to the air as the world reawakens. It’s also a time of growth and change, a time ripe for… teenage angst?
Enter Spring Awakening, a story about just that, exploring “the mystery of attraction, desire, sex, insecurity, and the highs and lows of navigating the pressures of young adult life,” according to The 5th Avenue Theatre. Based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, this play is dedicated to the youth. The original 2006 Broadway production starred Lea Michele (Fiddler on the Roof, Glee, Scream Queens)and Jonathan Groff (Hamilton, Frozen, Mindhunter), and ended up winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Despite being set in 1890s Germany, the musical’s score is filled with contemporary rock music composed by Duncan Sheik, and somehow it works. Overflowing with raw emotion in true rock and roll fashion, the songs and performances rebel against a world that seeks to silence. This unflinching exploration of youth allows audiences to peer into the character’s innermost turmoil as they confront life, passion, and the quest to understand.
This year will be the first time The 5th has done an original production of this show, with Jay Santos, The 5th’s associate artistic director, directing.
Just a reminder: This musical deals with some sensitive subject matter. Here’s The 5th Avenue Theatre’s content advisory for the show.
