The hottest show in town isn’t Hamilton, but a bright and beat-heavy hour-long play at Seattle Center’s venerated Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT). This is The Hula Hoopin’ Queen, written by award-winning playwright Gloria Bond Clunie (Giraffes Can’t Dance, My Wonderful Birthday Suit) and based on the book by Thelma Lynne Godin (How to Dress a Dragon), who was inspired by her time as a social worker and school librarian.
In modern-day Harlem, Portia, Jamara, and Kameeka all have one dream: to become their block’s reigning Hula Hoopin’ Queen. But when the agreed-upon contest falls upon the same day as neighborhood elder Miz Adeline’s birthday party, each girl learns a valuable lesson about community, competition, and friendship. The book is an Oprah Winfrey favorite—here she is reading it for Storyline Online—and SCT has already been extended far into March and built a heap of community engagement around the run.
