Unlike other local outdoor movie screenings, the city of Kirkland keeps the tradition up year-round with beach screenings in the winter and spring for those hardy enough to brave the PNW’s weather, so they’re very well-practiced in building community events. Of note, while most outdoor summer movies are projected and necessitate it be dusk, Kirkland has invested in a giant LED screen for all screenings. But now that the clouds have parted, the city to the northeast has a series of ten films in two different locations that’s sure to tickle the fancy of somebody in your party. It’s all free, to grab a blanket, curl up on the beach or the lawn, and get a load of this lineup.

Movie Showtimes:

๐ŸŽฌ Elemental (2023): Pixar’s welcomingly bizarre, thorny sleeper hit about opposing element in love; fire plus water equals a literal smoke show.

๐ŸŽฌ La La Land (2016): Winner of six Oscarsโ€”never mind the one it famously lostโ€”it’s a rare live-action original musical that also cleaned up at the box office.

๐ŸŽฌ Barbie (2023): 2023’s $1.5 billion-grossing juggernaut of a comedy is a practical effects delight that made Jacques Tati and Jacques Demy aesthetics cool for new generations.

๐ŸŽฌ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023): Each year, Tom Cruise flirts with the Grim Reaper, gives him a little smile, then pulls open his parachute. An underseen jolt of goofy kinetic energy.

๐ŸŽฌ Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981): This Spielberg/Lucas collab is iconic from the first frame, further solidified Harrison Ford’s bonafides, and taught us all a very valuable lesson about not being greedy with biblical artifacts.

๐ŸŽฌ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022): Better than a sequel-of-a-spinoff-of-a-sequel has any right to be, Florence Pugh, Harvey Guillรฉn, and John Mulaney give playful vocal support to the Dreamworks franchise.

๐ŸŽฌ Practical Magic (1998): Whidbey Island’s finest cinematic hour, Nicole Kidman/Sandra Bullock’s witchy seriocomic thriller may finally have a sequel on the way. Remind yourself of this Coupeville camp.

๐ŸŽฌ Brother Bear (2003): Often lost in Disney’s transitional period around the turn of the millennium, this Indigenous animated fable nicely features an all-too-rare Rick Moranis supporting role.
