Saddle up, pardners, because it’s time to rustle up some …pirates? 🏴☠️ Wait, that can’t be right.
“Imagine you were at work and suddenly pirates crashed into your office. What would you do? The only thing that makes any sense — put on the best damn show of your lives.”
That’s a direct quote from queer producers/comedians the Salty Licks (Tootsie Spangles, Jackie Miedema, Flossy Beatrice) on their latest edition of the Rootin’ Tootin’ Queer Cowboy Cabaret, which runs Aug. 27-29 at Theatre Off Jackson’s upstairs space. After finding success with their previous cabaret in 2024, they’re back for more delicious chaos.
“The Rootin’ Tootin’ is a goofy, queer cowboy fever dream,” the Salty Licks told The Ticket. “The show invites you to immerse yourself in a dusty, glittery western that always keeps you on your toes. The cabaret is an ongoing celebration of the magic of gathering together and a love letter to the ‘third spaces’ where strangers become friends, and everyone belongs.”
The Rootin’ Tootin’, the fictional saloon/watering hole that’s welcoming to all, is but a clothesline on which to hang nonstop, glorious nonsense. “It’s an immersive show with a cast of local treasures from the theater, burlesque, dance and comedy scenes.”
And the cabaret itself is only one of the evening’s offerings. “Come early and learn a line dance. You loved the show? And now you want to compete in a costume contest? We’ll see you at the after party for a little friendly competition. Whoever wins is first in line for post-show karaoke, if that’s your thing! Or you can sip on a themed drink and peruse the gallery walls!”
No matter where your loyalties lie — are you more of a horse-ridin’, lasso-swingin’ buckaroo, or be ye a swashbucklin’ buccaneer? — the Licks want you to have the time of your life. “We want the cast, audience members and floorboards shakin’ and quakin’ with laughter and delight.”
