Have you ever watched something about the culinary arts and just craved the food being made onscreen? Iā€™m thinking of the Italian beef sandwich on The Bear, every lavish feast in The Age of Innocence, the nostalgia-provoking ratatouille in Ratatouille, and all the meals in Ang Leeā€™s Eat Drink Man Woman and its remake Tortilla Soup.

If you said yes, and you also have an impressionable child, may I recommend Ramen and Read Aloud, an event happening at ramen house Ooinkā€™s location on Stone Way N, where D.C.-based author Patricia Tanumihardja will read from her picture book Ramen for Everyone. In it, seven-year-old Hiro thinks heā€™s old enough to take what heā€™s learned from his father and make the perfect bowl of ramen for his family. Though he hits every roadblock a young child would in the kitchen, Hiro learns that cooking isnā€™t about perfection; itā€™s about the heart you put into each meal.

If you find illustrator Shiho Pateā€™s illustrations mouthwatering, you are in the right place for some of the cityā€™s best craft ramen at Ooink. (Consider getting the mala kotteri ramen if you, like me, are all about the spice.) This Ooink location is not usually open for lunch, so it’s an opportunity both for your childā€™s imagination and your stomach. And if you want to make one of the ramen featured in Ramen For Everyone, you can purchase the book right there, then check the recipe on the last page for something to do with your youngā€™uns once you return home.
