The February rain may keep us inside where it’s warm and dry—luckily for us, an exciting, educational journey through the treetop canopies is still an option for Seattleites. National Geographic Live’s “From Roots to Canopy,” which runs from February 23rd to February 25th at Benaroya Hall, provides a “walk in the clouds” experience, allowing attendees to get a close-up look at the extraordinary wildlife and science of the hidden worlds suspended far over our heads.
From Roots to Canopy is the brainchild of Nalini Nadkarni, a tree canopy ecologist who spent 40 years studying the complex ecology of tree canopies. Nadkarni, a National Geographic Explorer At Large—the highest distinction within the organization—focused her career on studying the ways that trees and forests affect our daily lives. Case in point: Trees provide the most important sources of sustenance, protection, and wonder.
Nadkarni has been a true, unwavering pioneer during her decades-long work on this crucial issue. She spearheaded canopy access techniques to study the plants, animals, and microbes that live in the treetops during a time when no one even considered it an area worth studying. Now you can hear from the “Queen of the Canopy” and TreeTop Barbie herself while she’s here in Seattle.
With its pristine acoustics and luxurious design, Benaroya Hall is home to the Seattle Symphony, located in downtown Seattle.
