Do you tire of crossing the gaping maw of freeway between downtown and Capitol Hill? Lid I-5, a local advocacy group, has been trying to close it up for years so that instead of an unsettling pedestrian overpass, you’d be walking through a park or at least walking down a normal street.
Seattle already has some freeway lids—it’s how Freeway Park gets its name. The adjacent Washington State Convention Center, which came with expansions for Freeway Park, is also a lid. To the south, Sam Smith Park lids I-90. Another lid is underway in Montlake, too.
The Convention Center expansion paid for a feasibility study for a lid and hey—it’s feasible! The city is considering supporting the effort, and the state could eventually follow suit. If legislation gets pushed through and a project gets funding, it could create acres of new public space out of thin air!
If you’re still reading and haven’t, like, fallen asleep or closed the tab or whatever, have I got an event for you! Imagine the possibilities at a Lid I-5 social at Town Hall on Wednesday, September 13th. It’s free, and there will be light refreshments.
