Ever watched someone struggle through a Kermit the Frog voice in an attempt to look dateable? Welcome to Fun & Flirty, where Seattle’s notoriously passive dating culture transforms into chaotic entertainment. This comedy show-meets-dating experiment feels like stepping into an MTV reality show—complete with a literal “next” button for speed dating rounds.

I’ve never been quite so embarrassed to be a Seattleite as when I witnessed our dating culture on full display at a recent Fun & Flirty show. One contestant vied for the best bad date story, describing doubling up (then subsequently breaking her ankle on) a Lime scooter. A comedian pitching a hot, short king made him sing like Kermit the frog. And perhaps the most soul-crushing moment of all, a straight man revealed he had read the form wrong, squashing the potential of a real-life pickleball doubles happily-ever-after. Cohost Zahnae Aquino and I reminisced about the letdown. “Illiteracy is a problem,” she says.

The entire show is a satire on modern, app-based dating. Plus, it’s heavily influenced by shows like MTV’s Next—Aquino said trashy reality TV from the ’90s and 2000s inspired her. “I’m upset every day that we don’t live in a culture that can support that.”

The typical flow of the show includes a few segments:

  • The introduction includes heavy crowd work by Aquino and her cohost Jesse Warren, a game of “Smash-or-Pass,” bad date stories, and some success stories (a few month-long relationships have made it past the show!).
  • Local comedians do two singles pitches. You can apply to be pitched here. (You should be comfortable with getting roasted publicly.)
  • A speed dating round with a literal “next” button—Aquino describes this as “live swiping.”

I wasn’t surprised to hear Aquino say that queer women thrive at Fun & Flirty, but they’re lacking in eligible men. (PSA to a city full of shy guys!) Aquino wants first-timers to know this: “If you’re single, it’s a good place to meet people. If you’re on a date. It’s a good place to feel better about yourself.”
