Every year, the Suquamish Tribe sponsors and runs Chief Seattle Days, an event first celebrated in 1911 that honors the life and legacy of Chief Seattle, for whom our glittering city on the Sound is named. In and around Suquamish, organizers have put together activities that celebrate Coast Salish culture and people. The three-day event is open to the general public, and all are welcome to celebrate Chief Seattle and the Suquamish, who were one of the tribes represented by the Chief to sign the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1885.

Chief Seattle Days events include

  • A royalty pageant that will crown youth with a Senior Warrior/Miss/Two Spirit, Junior Warrior/Miss/Two Spirit, and Tiny Tot Warrior/Miss/Two Spirit crown and sash
  • A coastal jam song and dance session
  • Canoe racing featuring tribal-affiliated canoe clubs
  • A gravesite honoring where the Suquamish will practice their traditions, tell stories, and recount the history of Chief Seattle and their people
  • Powwows, where arena director Ryan Yellowjohn is at the helm with Anthony Blue Horse as MC, the Spring Creek Singers as host drum, and Cyrus Lafontaine and Wendy Boure serving as head man and head woman
