Miyazaki on the big screen 🐉

Few film companies are as lauded as Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio that entices adults and children in equal measure more than any other in cinema history. (That’s right, Pixar, I’m calling you out!) These are deeply felt, brazenly political stories that dazzle with visual invention and deep emotional resonance. And a heaping handful of them are coming to SIFF Cinema Downtown, with films from filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and his talented director colleagues.

This is your chance to see these works of art projected onto Seattle’s grandest screen instead of the notoriously poor-quality Fathom Events screenings that happen at your large-chain local chain theaters. Because these movies deserve full immersion. How else will join Chihiro on her sudden journey through the Shinto folklore of Spirited Away? Or take to the skies with porcine pilot Porco Rosso? Or soar through the environmentally ravaged world of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Films will be presented in both dubbed and subtitled versions, with the former holding down the matinees and the latter for evening shows. Though it’s a hotly debated point of contention, nobody’s going to take away your cineaste card if you choose a dub over the film’s original language. Heck, Miyazaki himself thinks you should see his movies in whatever language you speak because he’d rather you focus on watching the film

And no, not every Ghibli project will be shown—between movies and television, that would take us well into the new year—but if you all sell this out, I’m sure there’s more where that came from.
