When the casual ballet fan describes something as āballetic,ā they usually mean graceful, elegant and something akin to the Sugar Plum Fairy in āThe Nutcracker.ā But those familiar with the wide world of ballet (plus those who have seen the iconic early 2000s ballet drama āCenter Stageā) know that ballet can also mean staggering athleticism, gut-wrenching emotionality and boundary-crossing choreography.
This fall, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Company will showcase all three, with three distinct ballets.
First is the über-athletic āIn the Upper Room.ā A collaboration between Philip Glass and Twyla Tharp, this work is a match made in contemporary music and dance heaven. Upper Room’s nine segments feature dancers in pointe shoes and sneakers performing (as Twyla says herself), “fierce, driving and relentless movementsā aimed to āburn the retina.ā
Next is Dani Roweās heartbreaking āThe Window.ā This one-act ballet is a stylish, abstract commentary on the relationships that develop between complete strangers set to Shannon Ruganiās cinematic score.
Finally, PNB dancers Christopher DāAriano and Amanda Morgan will present the world premiere of āAfterTime.ā An embodiment of a years-long creative partnership, this piece showcases collaborative connection and the powerful interdisciplinary intersections that are possible in dance. A whirl of music, dance and fog, these three performances will leave audiences marveling at the skill of PNB Company dancers.
Pacific Northwest Ballet celebrates ballet excellence with thrilling dance performances at McCaw Hall, dance training and more.
