For the casual plant parent in the Pacific Northwest, nurturing cacti and succulents is often a major task. These sun-and-heat-loving plants often flounder in our region’s wet weather, gray skies, and low temperatures. That’s where the Cascade Cactus & Succulent Society (CCSS) comes in.
Since the early 1970s, CCSS has been an organization dedicated to the conservation of cacti and succulents from around the world. “Growing cacti and succulents in the moist Northwest is a challenge,” they wrote on their website. “One we have taken on with a passion.” They hold monthly meetings at the Phinney Center—which are open to non-members—centered around plant care and community.
On August 17th and 18th, the society will host its annual plant sale at Volunteer Park Conservatory on Capitol Hill. CCSS members are bringing their best and rarest cacti, succulents, and other exciting plants and accessories for the general public to pursue and buy. It’s an opportunity to ask all the succulent questions you can think of, learn about different types of prickly cacti, and—perhaps—take something home yourself. Sellers will rotate through their inventory over the weekend, so come both days to check out new stuff. Bring a box or bag with you if you plan on buying plants.
