I’ve begun my annual grumblings about the long dark. Where do the days go? What time is it? Why is it so cold? If there is anything that can temper my salty attitude (besides a warm spa day) it might be dessert…specifically, the blood orange and passionfruit pavlova from Nigella Lawson’s new book, Cook, Eat, Repeat: Ingredients, Recipes, and Stories. She once called them dreamy creations—definitely dreamy enough to drop-kick my winter doldrums.
The internationally renowned queen of home cooking is joining Seattle Arts & Lectures to speak about comfort food that makes up our day-in, day-out repertoire. In her words, “We return to dishes we love, not just because they mean something particular to us, but also because our hands feel comfortable preparing food that is familiar.” Her simple dishes take no shortcuts, but will boost your holiday table street cred: try the celery root and anchovy gratin, oxtail bourguignon, or no-knead black bread for a new annual tradition.
The event will take place at Benaroya Hall’s Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall on Sunday, November 13. James Beard award-winning food writer Sara Dickerman (formerly a Stranger restaurant critic & Seattle Magazine food editor) will lead the Q&A.
In-person general admission tickets are $35; limited $10 pay-what-you-can tickets are available for those with the most economic need. If changing out of your house sweater seems daunting, purchase a digital ticket ($10-$100, sliding scale) and spend a meditative Sunday morning layering noodles to recreate the “Lasagna of Love”.
