We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief now that the annual rush of the holidays is over and the new year has come and gone. But whatâs this? Making its rosy (or for some, dreaded) approach over the horizon is Valentineâs Day in all its red, pink, and white glory. For those who donât prescribe to a fuzzy, lovey-dovey celebration, and perhaps crave a more, say, dramatic time, the tenderly tragic Swan Lake arrives at Seattleâs McCaw Hall.
For those unfamiliar with the love story, a young princess (along with a slew of other maidens) is cursed by an evil enchanter to take the form of a swan by day, resuming her true form at night. Despite this misfortune, the prince of a neighboring kingdom stumbles across her while in human form by the lake sheâs now stuck inhabiting, and in true fairytale fashion, pledges his eternal devotion to her in order to break the spell. However, all does not go smoothly, of course, â as this is a tragedy â and so ensues deception, betrayal, and heartbreak. While a few different adaptations of the tale have been told over the years, Pacific Northwest Ballet leans into the balletâs original ending in a gentle way. Maybe have some tissues on hand for unexpected weeping.
Between those tears, prepare for dazzling sets and costumes, epic choreography, and to have your heart pounding along with the score.
