Stonehenge, the enigmatic 5,000-year-old megalithic circle, located in Wiltshire, England, has been pondered by scientists and spinners of urban legends alike for centuries. Some theories are more plausible than others: Ruins of a Roman temple? Spacecraft landing area for aliens? Ancient calendar?

Decide for yourself at the Royal BC Museum. Peruse 400-plus ancient artifacts along with archaeological insight and cutting-edge scientific research in their new Stonehenge exhibit. Highlights include burial belongings from the Amesbury Archer and the Stonehenge Archer, neither of which have ever toured North America before.

The Amesbury Archer died over 4,000 years ago and was buried with more than 100 artifacts, including five beakers, two gold hair ornaments, and three copper daggers. The Stonehenge Archer was discovered buried in a ditch outside Stonehenge along with his stone wrist guard and a fistful of flint arrowheadsā€”some of which are believed to have caused his death. Just another mystery to mull over.

Stonehenge is also the only stone circle in which the stones were moved long distances, shaped with stone tools, and jointed together. Or, if you believe the rumors, Merlin the wizard magically transported the enormous stones from Ireland, where giants had assembled them.

The Royal BC Museum inspires curiosity through shared stories, nature, history and culture.
