Sam Jay @ Here-After

Straight-shooting comedy, but definitely not straight 🎙️

Sam Jay is the type of funny that calls everyone in. Laughing out loud at her sets as I researched this piece, I thought I might never get to writing.

Some background on Jay: After years of grinding, Jay joined Saturday Night Live in 2017, becoming the first Black lesbian writer on the show. Jay hit a comedy milestone by dropping a Netflix special, 3 in the Morning, in 2020, and then went on to host a talk show, Pause with Sam Jay, on HBO Max and perform in the series Bust Down on Peacock. My favorite SNL sketch co-written by Jay is the recurring “Black Jeopardy.” Featuring Keenan Thompson as the show’s host, the game show quickly evolves into escalating side comments and conflicts with guest stars like Tom Hanks and Chadwick Boseman.

Since reopening in 2021, The Crocodile complex’s loungey Here-After venue has cemented itself as a premier comedy club, with performances from comedians like Sasheer Zamata (SNL) and Megan Stalter (Hacks). Sam Jay’s performance will surely bring her brand of straight-shooting comedy to Seattle, as well as NYC-based Ryan Donahue and Seattle comedian Chris Mejia, who will round out the night with Jay.

If you have yet to visit Here–After, expect to be impressed by the intimate venue, great cocktails, and comfy seats. (It’s also a movie theater!)
