The Scottish Highlands, where misty moors and ancient castles whisper tales of resilience and pride. Rivers turn through space and time, patiently carving expansive green glens over billions of years. A rugged natural beauty baked into the fabric of its people, a culture practiced in all forms — clothing, music, dance, athletics, poetry. This July, you don’t have to travel all the way to Scotland to experience this deep and rich tradition. Head to the Enumclaw Expo Center July 27th and 28th to enjoy the annual Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games & Clan Gathering.

Dedicated to preserving Scottish identity through the arts, the Seattle Scottish Highland Games Association has been bringing Scottish culture to the Pacific Northwest since 1947. As always, this year’s celebration will include a variety of activities for everyone.

For sports fans—or for people who like to watch other people make objects defy gravity—amateur and elite women and men athletes will compete in various brawny events. Watch the open stone toss, sheaf toss, hammer toss, and caber toss—where you can essentially watch people flip entire trees. Winners in their respective classes will become North American Champions.

The yearly Ceilidh, a traditional party based around music, dance, and storytelling, will be a highlight of the weekend—there’ll be four in total over Friday and Saturday. Stick around for the big one on Saturday evening to listen to a lineup of musicians on the south stage and judge the best performance.

Other spectacles throughout the weekend include judged music and dance competitions, a stage combat troupe, a Celtic arts showcase, the Avenue of Clans, vendors and pubs serving traditional Scottish food and imported goods, and the constant melodic sound of bagpipes filling the air.

This all-out fair is the perfect opportunity to roll out your tartan and head to Enumclaw for a vibrant weekend of culture and community.

Bringing Scotland to the Pacific Northwest for over 75 years, SSHGA is dedicated to the perpetuation of the Scottish arts.
