Picture this: you’re one of the greatest rappers of all time and it’s been nearly 20 years since you last released an EP as part of your acclaimed rap duo. What do you do? Well, you drop an ambient flute album, of course.

In November last year, André 3000 surprised the masses with his new debut solo record, New Blue Sun, which features 87 minutes of blissful, spiritual, flute-based tracks. André has played the instrument for years, and he’s even been regularly spotted playing the flute in public. How magical. The new album opens with “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time,”  a gorgeous and meditative song.

Of the opening track, André told NPR that “this album is about wind and breathing. In that way, it is true. It is literally blowing me this way and I’m blowing flutes and I’m blowing digital instruments.” The rest of the album unfurls into other minimalist tracks that range from somber to joyful, none with lyrics. Sometimes, the key to creativity is zigging where you’re expected to zagNew Blue Sun is emblematic of new heights for the 49-year-old rapper, proving there’s always time for mastering new pursuits. At his Paramount show, R&B crooner serpentwithfeet will open.
