Friday, February 24th – Sunday, March 5th

There are two types of people in this world: restaurant repeaters and novelty eaters. I count myself as one of the latter—after all, variety is the spice of life. Refresh your palate and round out your Black History Month celebrations: founded in 2016, Black Restaurant Week elevates Black-owned eateries nationwide.

A quick guide to standout bites around town:

🍌 Banana creme pudding ice cream cookie sandwiches at Creamy Cone Cafe in Rainier Beach. Milkshakes and affogatos are $1 off for the week!

🍞 Black-eyed pea okazu pan at Umami Kushi, also in Rainier Beach. This puffy fried bread is made with activated charcoal dough and served with collard green pesto.

🦐 Shrimp suya tacos by Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen, Wednesday and Friday at Rose Temple Bar in Capitol Hill. The namesake spicy peanut seasoning is balanced by cooling cilantro sauce and crunchy red cabbage.

🐔 Chicken palm nut soup at Taste of Congo in Tukwila’s Spice Bridge Food Hall. Scoop up pieces of juicy roasted chicken with rice or fufu, a doughy cassava root side.

🥩 Philly cheesesteak at Conscious Eatery in Georgetown. House-roasted beef, house rosemary aioli, and Grand Central Bakery bread? The West Coast may do this sandwich best. Support Conscious Eatery’s philanthropic model by adding on a side, like their spring salad—greens, strawberries, blueberries, and crispy fried yams.

🧇 Waffle breakfast sandwiches at Lizzie Lou’s Too in Tacoma. Also, peep their loaded shakes; hello, blueberry cheesecake! For a lighter breakfast, check this week’s $10 waffle special.

🦜 “Parrot Juice” at Intentions Juice Bar, also in Tacoma. This tangy, tropical blend of carrot, pineapple, apple, lemon, and ginger is the immunity boost you need to get through the rest of midwinter.
