Nearly a decade after it debuted on Broadway, Waitress remains one of the most popular modern-day musicals. Its longstanding popularity is no surpriseâafter all, the show has pie, original music by Sara Bareilles, inspiring women friendships, a love story, and (even more) pie. The pop-rock production follows the story of Jenna Hunterson, who longs to create a better life for herself. A baking contest gives Jenna the opportunity to forge a new path, and she finally begins to flourish.
The 5th Avenue Theatre is putting a new spin on this production, and a stellar cast of both local and out-of-town actors has been tapped to bring the quirky, lovable characters to life. âItâs a story thatâs very centered on women,â says Bill Berry, executive director of The 5th Avenue Theatre. And with the original Waitress production developed by an all-female creative team, it feels like a very appropriate way to celebrate Womenâs History Month.
