Elliott Bay hosts a literary launch with teeth as psychologist, poet and former Stranger contributor Trisha Ready debuts her first novel, “Nobuko,” in conversation with editor and FrizzLit founder Christopher Frizzelle. The event marks the first release from FrizzLit Editions — a fiercely independent new Seattle press that aims to champion books too weird, beautiful or brainy for corporate publishing.
“Nobuko” tells the story of a queer American woman in the 1980s who goes to Japan to teach English and falls for a mysterious woman living in a remote cabin — who, among other things, makes teeth. Told in a hybrid form that Ready invented (and which Frizzelle dubs a “Ready Sequence”), the novel unfolds in 108 bite-sized chapters of fewer than 150 words each. Expect yakuza intrigue, samurai swords, food and various kinds of romance.
Frizzelle says the book is self-contained, vivid and unlike anything else out there. Plus, “Nobuko” is just the beginning: FrizzLit’s first season will also include new books by Seattle legends Rebecca Brown and Charles Mudede. But it all starts here — with a new voice, a new way to tell stories and a new press ready to fight the “stupidity crisis” with style, smarts and a whole lot of heart.
Come meet your new favorite book — and maybe your new favorite publisher.
