Sorry to the haters, but M. Night Shyamalan is a legit good filmmaker. Sure, say what you want about his scripts and his insistence upon casting himself in his films, but few modern mainstream American filmmakers are more assured with the camera or as tonally playful. Unbreakable slays. So does the post-9/11 paranoia of The Village. Even the overwrought Lady in the Water is unmistakably the work of someone triumphantly, defiantly himself. He’s got moxie, is what I’m sayin’.

After a couple notable financial failures, he refocused on small-scale spectacle—remember how Glass climaxes in a parking lot puddle, and how in Old he used every trick in the book to make a tiny stretch of beach feel like a jittering hellscape? Limited locations seem to suit him just fine, so here comes Trap, which will likely demonstrate a camera move I hadn’t even considered until that point.

This time, he has more space to play around in than 2023’s Knock at the Cabin (guess where that takes place?), setting his latest suspense tale at a sports/entertainment arena, where a serial killer brings his daughter to a pop music concert… only to realize that a slew of cops have set him up and are ready to pounce. Tight. I love an arena-set thriller. Watch this, then put on Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Sudden Death, why not?

Shyamalan’s not going anywhere. Enjoy the dang ride
