Don’t hear it in your needs and don’t hear it in your greeds
Just hear it in the sound of time a-passing
Find it, I got to hear it all again
My heart has heard the sound of harmony
Blind to it, as my tears fall again
It’s only by the music I’ll be free

They changed the world with their rough-edged, aggressive, guitar-smashing, microphone-swinging crossover rock sound that separated themselves from their British Invasion counterparts. They made it through two rock opera film adaptations, Roger Daltrey’s weird acting career, Pete Townshend’s solo work, a very public split and the eventual passing of half their band.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to The Who as they kick their way into Climate Pledge Arena for The Song is Over, their North American farewell tour. Supported by Seattle-based opening act Candlebox, The Who are, simply put, going to kill it regardless of their advancing age. (But just FYI, Pete and Roger are 80 and 81.)

Even the most neophytic among us could find something in their six-decade catalogue that’ll rile you up based solely on recognition (licensing their work to car commercials, “CSI” title sequences and countless movie soundtracks keep the money rolling in), but their deep cuts and willingness to experiment (e.g., a Ted Hughes-inspired concept album) has kept them fresh and ferocious as ever.

They last said goodbye in the 1980s, but the retirement was short-lived. This time, though, they might really mean it. Be there, ya dang Whooligans.
