You may think you know the fairytale of “Sleeping Beauty,” but this isn’t your childhood bedtime story! Step into a world of magic and monarchs in a re-imagining of the classic tale. Follow Princess Aurora through a Pacific Northwest-inspired fairytale, as she fulfills her destiny in a ballet full of adventure, dreams, and love.
Artistic director Peter Boal has assembled an eclectic team of artists to launch this brand-new production of The Sleeping Beauty, which has graced stages around the globe since its creation in 1890 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Boal’s vision of this renowned ballet is set in a timeless fantasy world that incorporates the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and Northwest Coast art.
In the spirit of The Sleeping Beauty’s fantasy setting, scenic designer (and local glass artist) Preston Singletary has created a Northwest-inspired fantasyland infused with Northwest Coast design elements. Costume designer Paul Tazewell (Wicked, Hamilton, West Side Story) has drawn on that inspiration for the 236 costumes he created for the production
The Sleeping Beauty is a wonderful introduction to ballet for kids due to the lively dance, easy to follow storyline, and fanciful costumes. Plus, there are plenty of surprises to meet the eyes at every turn of this enchanting and original production. Heads up: The production team isn’t pulling any punches—the all-new scenery and costumes work seamlessly with lighting and projection design to truly set the stage.
