There have been numerous books about the Pacific Northwest music scene of the ’90s, but just a handful have been written by the folks involved in that scene. That’s what makes Steve Turner’s Mud Ride: A Messy Trip Through the Grunge Explosion so valuable; it’s a look from the inside-out in all its super fuzz big muffed glory.
As a member of Mr. Epp and the Calculations, Turner played to audiences of maybe a hundred at Seattle clubs like the Metropolis; as a member of Mudhoney, he graduated to audiences of 50,000-plus at England’s Reading Festival. And his journey encompasses everything from bowling with Ron Reagan, Jr., to declining Kurt Cobain’s gift of a gold record award for Nirvana’s Nevermind, to a VIP tour of the White House (he didn’t get to meet Bill Clinton, but he still has the complimentary box of peanut M&Ms). Not to mention keeping Mudhoney going for an impressive 35 years (and they’ve just released their 11th album, Plastic Eternity).
He’ll have lots to share in his two Seattle appearances promoting this fine tome, at Capitol Hill’s Elliott Bay Book Company and the Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park. Flannel shirts not required for admittance.
