What can’t chef, author, and YouTube star Sohla El-Waylly do? In the past several years, we’ve seen her make flatbread from an ancient recipe found in King Tut’s tomb, concoct a three-course meal out of Halloween candy with her husband Ham, devise an ice cream lasagna, and charm the heck out of literally everyone with her big brain and chic bob.

Now the culinary polymath has come out with her first cookbook,Ā Start Here: Instructions for Becoming a Better Cook,Ā to teach us all how to chef it up in our home kitchens. And, boy, is it a tome. Printed on Bible-like paper, El-Waylly spends 656 pages teaching you the basic techniques of cookingā€”everything from how to make a sauce to how to make all kinds of doughā€”written in a practical and easy-to-follow manner. Along the way, she folds in 200 new original delicious recipes, likeĀ charred lemon risottoĀ andĀ seared and braised chicken thighsĀ that you can use all your new skillz on. Plus, the book is bound so itĀ lays completely flat, making it easy to reference whatever page you’re on without completely cracking the spine to keep the book open. Innovation!

El-Waylly will discuss her book and more with food writer and cook Frankie Gaw at her Town Hall talk. Come prepared to salivate.Ā
