Nearly 100 years ago, Seattleites would flock to the Paramount Theatre not to see Feist or Big Thief, rather, to see movies. Back in its heyday, cinephiles packed the Pine Street theater’s seats to see the likes of Buster Keaton, Clara Bow, and Rudolph Valentino act on the big screen as movies went from silent to sound.
While we’re far beyond that moment, since 1998, Paramount has offered movie lovers a chance to step back in time with its beloved Silent Movie Mondays series. For just $12, you can watch a silent film like they used to do in the olden days.
Up next: Charlie Chaplin’s classic comedy The Gold Rush (1925). This special screening features not just the theatre’s vintage Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, but a full 15-piece orchestra performing Chaplin’s original score live.
Watch as Chaplin’s iconic Tramp character ventures into the Alaskan wilderness seeking fortune, encountering everything from dangerous wildlife to desperate criminals. Comedy writer Stephen Winer will provide special guest commentary, adding context to this piece of cinema history.
