I’m glad the rest of the world is finally catching up with women’s basketball just in time for the Seattle Storm’s sterling silver anniversary. That’s right, they’ve been sinking baskets for 25 years, or as long as Lil Nas X has been alive, and they’ve been an incredible part of Seattle sports lore. In that quarter of a century, they’ve made it to the playoffs all but six times and won the whole shebang four times. Their roster has seen the likes of Breanna Stewart, Lauren Jackson, and GOAT Sue Bird. (Her rip-roaring documentary, Sue Bird: In the Clutch, is streaming as we speak.)

Their 2023 season wasn’t stellar, but their fanbase is still the nicest in the city, Doppler is a great weirdo mascot, team theme song AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” always gets me hype, and the Storm slots into the new Climate Pledge Arena perfectly. Meanwhile, Jewell Lloyd and Ezi Magbegor put on a hell of a show each and every game. In off-season movements, Kia Nurse has now left us for the Los Angeles Sparks, we’ve drafted UConn’s Nika Muhl and Indiana Hoosier Mackenzie Holmes, and joining the roster this year is free agent Skylar Diggins-Smith, coming in from the Phoenix Mercury. (I’m acquaintances with a longtime Storm fan and, though he admits to booing Diggins-Smith when she played against Seattle, it was only because she was just too dang good; he’s ecstatic to have her around.)

All this is to say, get your butt to CPA for the May 14th season opener against the Minnesota Lynx and get ready to have the Storm blow you away.
