The Pete Carroll era is dead. Long live the Pete Carroll era. Regardless of your opinion of his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, he’s a huge part of one of the greatest days in Seattle, 2014’s Super Bowl XLVIII, when the Hawks demolished the Denver Broncos 43-8 and gave the franchise their first-ever Bowl win. Cannons and fireworks exploded in neighborhoods all over the Pacific Northwest, the parade through downtown and past the Seattle Center was one for the ages, and as a colleague put it, it felt like the city finally lost its virginity. The less said about their heartbreaking Bowl appearance the following year against the Patriots, the better, and while the team reached the playoffs six more times, the bloom came off the rose. After 14 seasons of service, Carroll was sent off this past January.

Now we enter the age of Mike Macdonald, former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator turned Hawks head coach, and the dawning of…well, you’ve just gotta come by Lumen Field on September 8th and find out. If last season’s 9-8 record couldn’t get them into the playoffs, then I guess they just have to win more. Easy, right? At least the crowd will be riled up, as their season-opening opponent is none other than Super Bowl XLVIII losers Broncos. Though we won’t be able to boo ex-Hawk QB Russell Wilson anymore—he moved onto the Pittsburgh Steelers after two subpar years in Denver—the crowd will still be the loudest thing in the Emerald City
