When visiting the Seattle Art Museum, you have a unique opportunity to take in more than just the wondrous art around you when you step through the doors. Through SAM’s lecture series and other dynamic programming, you have the chance to reflect, start a dialogue and uncover new perspectives about the world.

One such series, SAM Talks, brings nationally recognized artists, scholars and cultural thinkers to Seattle for conversations that deepen your understanding of art and its impact on society.

On March 7, as part of SAM’s ongoing initiative on Alexander Calder and his extensive influence, art historian and distinguished professor Dr. Richard Powell will take the stage to delve into Calder’s legacy, specifically for artists like Thaddeus Mosely and other artists in the African diaspora.

Throughout his career, Powell has investigated how Black art has shaped American history and what it’s future means for our country. In addition to teaching courses in American art and the arts of the African diaspora, Powell has written on a range of topics and organized numerous art exhibitions, including “Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance” (London & Berkeley: University of California, 1997) and “Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist” (Durham, NC: Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, 2014).

Seating for walk-ins is available on a first-come, first-served basis after all RSVP holders have been accommodated. The talk is free with admission. An RSVP does not include admission to the galleries.

With three dynamic locations, Seattle Art Museum has been the center for visual arts in the Pacific Northwest since 1933.

Upcoming SAM Talks this March:

🎫 Starting Thursday, March 5 and running through Sunday, August 2, be sure to check out “Beyond Mysticism: The Modern Northwest,”  a special exhibition exploring early-20th-century Pacific Northwest modernism. As part of the SAM Talks series, SAM’s Ann M. Barwick Curator of American Art, Theresa Papanikolas, will lead a discussion and Q&A on the stories behind the exhibition on Thursday, March 12.

🎫 Rounding out the SAM Talks series for March, Burmese-American space engineer MiMi Aung will speak to her work on both NASA’s Mars Ingenuity Helicopter and Amazon’s Project Leo as part of SAM’s Asia Society Series on Wednesday, March 18.
