Seattle’s fanciest reading event just got fancier. This August, the beloved Silent Reading Party at the historic Sorrento Hotel will move from its usual cozy spot in the Fireside Room to the hotel’s stunning rooftop and seventh-floor penthouse. For the first time ever, you can settle in with a book on the Sorrento’s roof as the sun sets behind the downtown skyline and into Elliott Bay.
As always, the formula is simple and soothing. Guests read quietly while enjoying the soft, live piano music of Paul Matthew Moore, the event’s longtime musical companion. Worried about too much sun? Don’t be: seating will be available both on the roof deck and inside the elegant, sheltered penthouse.
Open since 1909, the Sorrento is one of Seattle’s most storied hotels, and these events promise a rare chance to soak up its atmosphere from a whole new vantage point. If demand is high — as it likely will be — the hotel is ready to add more dates to the summer lineup.
Need something new to read? Keep an eye on the Kickstarter for host Christopher Frizzelle’s FrizzLit Editions. Their first release, “Nobuko” by Trisha Ready, arrives in August — a queer love story set in 1980s Japan.
