Just once a year, as you wend your way through the green glens of the Pacific Northwest, you might catch the lilting skirl of bagpipes and feel your heart beating in time with a tenor drum. 🥁 For two days only, a Scottish celebration of music, dance, athleticism and poetry emerges from the mountainous mists of Enumclaw. Catch it before this will-o’-the-wisp disappears into the past once more. 🌀
For the 78th year, the music of the pipes and drums, the beauty of Highland dancing, the brawn of Scottish athletics and the sharing of clan history are returning to the PNW with the Scottish Highland Games & Clan Gathering. Dedicated to preserving Scottish identity through the arts, the Seattle Scottish Highland Games Association has been bringing Scottish culture to the Pacific Northwest since 1947. “It’s a great organization filled with friendly, passionate people who want to continue to nurture pride in Scottish heritage in the PNW,” says past SSHGA president Colin Mathieson. As always, this year’s celebration will include a variety of activities for everyone.
Catch iconically Scottish feats of strength during the North American Scottish Athletics Championship, where amateur and elite athletes compete in events like the open stone toss, sheaf toss, hammer toss and caber toss (basically, tree flipping, for the uninitiated). Watch the US West Coast Drum Corps Championship, hear the colorful pipe bands, witness Highland dancers earn worldwide renown and enjoy the sights and sounds of four stages jam-packed with Celtic music.
Hungry for more? Visitors can sample a wide variety of Scottish food and drink as you stroll through the clan tents to delve into your Scottish ancestry and wend your way through the Celtic vendors selling goods imported from the British Isles. It’s the perfect opportunity to dust off your kilt, roll out your tartan and head to Enumclaw for a vibrant weekend of culture and community.
Bringing Scotland to the Pacific Northwest for over 75 years, inspiring new generations to discover their stories.
