Legos are having a moment in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood this summer. The Lake Union-adjacent Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) currently features the beloved blocks at its Towers of Tomorrow exhibit, which displays 20 Lego skyscrapers, including the Burj Khalifa skyscraper. But the possibilities for creation are going even higher at the museum’s summertime Outside the Brick event, a hands-on, all-ages play-in-the-park brick day.
Perhaps the world’s most universal toy, Lego has delighted builders of all ages for just shy of 100 years. The name, created from the Danish words “Leg” and “Godt,” which means “play well,” has become synonymous with inventive play. A single Lego block is so strong it can hold over 953 pounds and support around 375,000 other Lego bricks before breaking. They’ve been used to build everything from a driveable car to a functioning harpsichord—also, a whole apartment building in Florida was built with Lego-like bricks.
MOHAI is inviting the public to harness their inner Bob the Builders at the Outside the Brick event on Saturday, August 24th, where visitors can:
- Set up a Lego still life and sketch it with the help of the Gage Academy of Art
- Join MOHAI staff for a collaborative game that mixes RollerCoaster Tycoon with marbles and Lego bricks
- See artist Dytrich Nguyen use a Lego robot that can recognize colors
- Make unique prints with the assistance of Partners in Print
- See the creations from Master Builder Admir Anu Creates, and get an insider’s look at her imaginative building
