Playwright Maggie Lee and director Amy Poisson are longtime collaborators, having worked together at local companies Macha Theatre Works and Seattle Public Theater (Macha’s new home, where Poisson is the Producing Artistic Director). Their latest, Once More, Just for You, is a speculative-fiction drama that’s “an existential, thought-provoking personal journey with an awesome time machine,” according to the pair.
“On the surface, it’s a story about time travel,” Lee and Poisson told The Ticket in a joint interview, “but following in the tradition of classic science fiction, it’s really about complex moral questions and human emotions. Is it ever possible to fix anything or anyone if you already know what’s going to happen? We feel the play taps uniquely into Seattle’s adult geek culture as a curious, thoughtful science-fiction story for a grownup audience.”
Their previous plays together, such as The Flight Before Xmas, the Gregory Award-winning Sheathed, and the New Providence steampunk trilogy (The Clockwork Professor, A Hand of Talons, The Tumbleweed Zephyr), have been a fruitful partnership. And it doesn’t seem like they’re stopping anytime soon.
“We love our team! We have worked together as playwright and director for over 10 years, and this is our seventh show together, so we share a pretty special bond. Our cast is an incredible group of Asian American female-identifying actors who are kickass in every way, [and] they are going to make you belly laugh and tear at your heartstrings, all at the same time.”
