What if you could delete your bad memories? That time you got up to present in front of your class only to realize you’d completely forgotten everything? Gone. That time you were bit by a runaway dog on the playground? Nonexistent. All our experiences, good and bad, fundamentally shape our perspectives and how we approach the world, but it’s intriguing to imagine: What would you be able to overcome without past fear and pain?
This is a question currently being researched by neuroscientist Steve Ramirez. Currently an assistant professor of neuroscience at Boston University, Ramirez is working on the ability to create and delete memories in rodents. The ultimate goal? To see how this mind-altering ability can help human patients deal with symptoms related to PTSD and depression by minimizing bad memories and amplifying positive ones.
In Untangling the Mind, a National Geographic Live presentation, Ramirez will take the audience on a deep dive into the complex, fascinating inner-workings of the brain, examining how it can power ideas that change the world.
