This summer marks the third anniversary of the Movies by the Tower series, a collaboration between Scarecrow Video and the Maple Leaf Community Council. What began as an outdoor family movie night in Councilmember Billy Thompson’s backyard has quickly grown to a community event that now spans the Maple Leaf Reservoir Park. In 2023, organizers estimated that over a thousand people gathered under the stars to watch the specially curated films throughout the summer. This year, the series theme is “Women in Film.” Women directed the three films selected (directors Ava DuVernay, Great Gerwig, and Penny Marshall). Each features female protagonists with feminist themes. The series kicks off Saturday August 10th, and continues throughout the month.

Movie schedule:

🎬 A Wrinkle in Time (2018) – Disney’s story follows a young girl who, with the help of three astral travelers (Oprah (!!), Mind Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon), sets off on a quest to find her missing father. This magical family-friendly adventure has a lot of heart and will look spectacular on the outdoor screen.

🎬 Barbie (2023) – Hi Barbie! Yes, Great Gerwig’s funny feminist manifesto that broke box office records will undoubtedly draw a large crowd at Maple Leaf Park. Starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll who gets a taste of the human world—oh yeah, Ryan Gosling also makes an appearance.

🎬 A League of Their Own (1992) – It wouldn’t be summer without showing the greatest baseball movie ever. (I said what I said.) Director Penny Marshall’s sports comedy/drama tells a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The stacked all-star cast (Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna) and pure emotional energy will give you plenty of reasons to remember “there’s no crying in baseball.”
