SIFF’s longtime New Year’s Eve tradition is back to shout in your face with all its might. And in this sing-along version, you can bellow it right back.
Baz Luhrmann’s cult hit jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!—yes, it’s hard to remember that the Oscar-nominated film that has seemingly dominated theatre kid culture for nearly a quarter of a century was a flop when it barreled into theatres in May of 2001—continues to be sensational entertainment. If anything, its jarring, chaotic energy has only matured with age, presenting a singular experience overflowing with barking mad ideas, extravagantly garish visuals, and a twinkling earnestness. It’s a vibe that both embraced the arthouse spirit of the 1990s and laid the foundations for the future of the movie musical, which it and 2002’s Chicago helped revitalize. Most studios aren’t ballsy enough anymore to finance something that looks, feels, sounds like Moulin Rouge!
For one glorious night, the Uptown’s largest theater transforms into the infamous Parisian nightclub, where you can:
