No one is really doing it like Mike Gordon. The 26-year-old guitarist who plays under the name Mk.gee plays a smooth mixture of soulful ’80s R&B, lo-fi indie, soft rock, and bedroom-y pop that wraps itself around mysterious, longing lyrics. He very much exists in the context of 21st-century experimental R&B vets like the elusive Jai Paul, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and post-Blonde Frank Ocean. Meaning he’s in good company.

Mk.gee first gained recognition for building guitar riffs for musician Dijon and eventually went on to produce for artists like Omar Apollo and Kacy Hill. After a steady stream of mixtapes and EP releases over the last seven years, Mk.gee finally released his debut album, Two Star & the Dream Police, in February to instant acclaim. In their review, Pitchfork called the young guitarist a “master of melody, chiseling gorgeous, richly detailed pop songs from seemingly cluttered compositions.” On tracks like “Are You Looking Up” and “Candy,” Mk.gee creates a lot of sonic space using spare rhythms and warbly riffs. It’s at once low-key and all-enveloping, melancholic but hopeful. Sorta feels like the future.
