It’s getting supercalifragilisticexpialidocious up in The 5th Avenue Theatre! Yes, everybody’s favorite nanny with the carpet bag full of whimsy is brightening up the downtown corridor to transport you to old Edwardian England.
Disney & Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is a story bursting at the seams with fun, fantasy, and filigree, as the titular magical nanny forever changes the lives of the Banks family. But it’s not simply that she teaches rambunctious young Jane and Michael how to behave. What makes her practically perfect in every way is how she unlocks the mysteries of life by stimulating their ever-expanding imaginations.
Adapted from Disney’s greatest live-action cinematic successes, itself based on the beloved P.L. Travers series of children’s novels, the stage version hit the West End and Broadway 20 years ago with a pedigree to die for. With theatrical megaproducer Cameron Mackintosh (The Phantom of the Opera)at the helm, he retained the original 1964 film’s songs by the incomparable Sherman Brothers (The Jungle Book, Charlotte’s Web, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and hired Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) to polish up the story for a new era. Rest assured Seattle’s great musical house has thrown everything behind this landmark staging.
Bust out your chimney sweep brooms and get chim chim cher-ee when Mary Poppins takes over Seattle.
One of America’s leading musical theater companies, The 5th Avenue Theatre shares the joy of musicals with the Pacific Northwest.
