The moment major league hockey made it to Seattle, it took over. Sellout crowds, high ticket prices, and some of the most popular merchandise in the entire league. The Kraken are an undeniable entity if you live within a six-state radius of Climate Pledge Arena. It’s one of the city’s best overall experiences, with an excellent preshow ceremony that makes even the biggest of doubters’ hearts beat fast. (Yes, that’s an original score from multiple Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.)

Now let’s check out the stats for their first three years: meh season, really good season, okay season. Well, you can’t win them all, as much as I would like them to.

But now we’ve hit their ostensible senior year as an organization, and it’s time to release the Kraken in full force. With the newly appointed Jessica Campbell as assistant coach—making her the first woman to coach in the history of the NHL—they’re primed to rise in the ranks of the Pacific League. Maybe they won’t immediately reach the heights of the Vegas Golden Knights, another newish team that has already drank from the Stanley Cup, but there’s always time

They open their season on Tuesday, October 8th, against the St. Louis Blues. To be honest, I haven’t thought about the Blues since the Sega Genesis game NHLPA ’93; it was the year I almost moved to the Midwest, then suddenly didn’t, but I still went to a game with my dad and he bought me a licensed puck. Then I spent a year picking them in the videogame and always coming up short against the Chicago Blackhawks in “season mode.” (The game later featured prominently in the movie Swingers; “Mikey, check it out. His head’s bleeding!”)
