When the Alaskan Way Viaduct stood on Seattle’s waterfront, it was hard to imagine what could exist without it. Today, instead of twin layers of concrete and cars, citizens can see from the cityscape to the Sound, with iconic landmarks like Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square in between. 🐟

After a decades-long commitment to creating a space that fosters culture, community and belonging, and the City’s investment in its largest civic project since the 1962 World’s Fair, Seattle will be celebrating the new waterfront. The 20-acre Waterfront Park, with its new park areas, plazas, a playground, protected bike lane and thousands of new plants and trees, offers many spaces and unique experiences.

Saturday, Sept. 6, marks a historic moment for the city to celebrate. Held in partnership between Friends of Waterfront Park and the City of Seattle, Waterfront Park’s Grand Opening Celebration will feature performances, interactive experiences, art installations, beer gardens, food trucks and more — all free and open to everyone.

From Railroad Way South near the stadiums to Pier 62 and the Overlook Walk connecting Pike Place Market to the waterfront, Waterfront Park has plenty of room to celebrate (and over 100 artists, performers and experiences to keep the party going).

  •  Listen to a Seattle Kokon Taiko drum ensemble, revel in a Central District music showcase with LANGSTON or learn to do the hustle on the Salish Steps.
  • Join a jellyfish lantern parade, send off the Buffalo Soldiers and Daughters of Royalty drill team procession or listen to Afro Caribbean rhythms on Pier 62 with the Caribbean Seafest, Brasil in Motion and REPOSADO.
  • Settle in with quiet story time with the Seattle Public Library on Pier 58 until you’re ready for break dancing with the Massive Monkees, K-Pop and Indigenous beats.
  • Wander along the Park Promenade while sipping and snacking away and experience jazz from D’Vonne Lewis Trio and the Northwest Tap Connection.
  • Take part in some family fun at Pier 66 with activities, treats and music for kids of all ages, hosted by the Port of Seattle.

Waterfront Park is a partnership between Friends of Waterfront Park, the City of Seattle and the community.
