‘Freak The Mighty’ @ Seattle Rep

Welcome to a day in the life of students Maxwell Kane and Kevin “Freak” Avery. Together, they’re Freak The Mighty, an unlikely but unbeatable team ready to take on the world. And this summer, they’re taking the Seattle stage.

Based on Rodman Philbrick’s bestselling novel and from the Tony Award-winning producers of “Come From Away,” “Freak The Mighty” is a brand-new musical about friendship, courage and growing up. Its blend of early 1990s nostalgia, adventure, warmth and wonder creates a compelling theater experience for parents, grandparents, teens and longtime musical theater fans alike.

“‘Freak The Mighty’ is the kind of show you bring someone you love to see,” says Seattle Rep Artistic Director Dámaso Rodríguez. “Like the great coming-of-age stories many of us grew up with, it’s filled with humor, imagination and heart. But what makes it truly special is the way it centers characters who are rarely at the center of the story.”

Presented by Seattle Rep in partnership with Cleveland Play House, the musical continues Seattle Rep’s commitment to developing ambitious new work and bringing world premieres to local audiences.

Access consultants Talleri A. McRae and Sofiya Cheyenne worked alongside the creative team throughout development, advising on language, casting, design, audience experience and accessibility to help ensure the production authentically centers the lived experiences of its disabled characters.

With book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe and music by Ryan Fielding Garrett, “Freak The Mighty” features an original contemporary score with high-energy ensemble numbers, intimate ballads and soaring orchestrations.

“It’s a soul-stirring musical about friendship, family, resilience and learning to tell your story,” says Rodríguez. “I think audiences of all ages will find something deeply meaningful in this world premiere.”
