Charlie Wiggins may be the most dominant race car driver you’ve never heard of.
Despite his talents as a driver and mechanic, as a Black man in early 20th century America, Wiggins was barred from numerous prestigious racing events like the Indy 500. In the Glory and Gold Sweepstakes, however, he commanded the field as a four-time winner.
Wiggins’ remarkable achievements challenged racial barriers and left an enduring mark on American motorsports. And now visitors to LeMay – America’s Car Museum can see each triumph on display.
Guest curated by renowned automotive designer Ed Welburn, “For Gold & Glory: A Tribute to Charlie Wiggins” brings Wiggins’ story to life through historic photographs, artifacts and immersive storytelling. The exhibition features a particularly remarkable find — the original Wiggins Special, the one-of-a-kind race car Wiggins built and drove to four championships. On public display for the first time in more than 90 years, the Wiggins Special serves as the centerpiece of an exhibition exploring his ingenuity, perseverance and extraordinary racing career.
“For Gold & Glory” restores Charlie Wiggins and his accomplishments to their rightful place in American motorsports history, inviting a new generation to discover the man, the machine and a legacy that deserves to be remembered.
Explore 300+ vehicles, rotating exhibitions, racing simulators and unforgettable automotive stories across four floors at LeMay – America’s Car Museum.
