Much love to Emma Stone. I truly mean it. The second I saw her performance in Poor Things, I knew she was getting her second Oscar. And while I hate that awards season makes us pit women against each other all for the sake of a trophy given out by an organization originally created to bust unions, wow did Lily Gladstone give 2023’s best performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s outstanding and horrific chronicle of the gradual undoing of Osage Nation wealth in 1920s Oklahoma. And while a win would have been a boon to Indigenous cinema, at least the world knows what we PNWs already knew: that the Montana-and-Washington-raised Gladstone is one for the ages, and she has impeccable taste in projects. Just ask Kelly Reichart (Certain Women), Sterlin Harjo (FX’s Reservation Dogs), and Morissa Maltz (The Unknown Country).

Gladstone’s latest is Fancy Dance, a Sundance-premiering drama from filmmaker Erica Tremblay about Jax Goodiron, a Seneca-Cayuga woman desperately trying to hold her family together. But with her sister Wadatawi missing, the Federal government is breathing down her neck and threatening to rehome her niece Roki. With little choice, Jax spirits away with Roki in search of Wadatawi, only to come face-to-face with an impossible and deeply racist justice system. What will these two Indigenous women discover on their journey, and will they make it out alive
