She is her. Erykah Badu has captured the music world with her sound for decades. Groovy, catchy—a vibe. The type of music for late-night drives, casual strolls through Seattle, or groovin’ in one of the biggest concert venues here in Washington. Something Mos Def accomplishes, too. It’s easy to get trapped within his old-school beats and flow, but his storytelling is unparalleled, expressed loud and clear through awe-inspiring lyricism.
The two have been making their own music since the ’90s, dominating their respective genres. Her first-ever album Baduizm was iconic, defining neo-soul R&B in the early 2000s—with her most famous hit being “On & On,” a song that magically appears in any cookout hosted by someone over 35. Mos Def, on the other hand, has been a pioneer in his style of rap. His first solo album Black on Both Sides cemented who he is, bringing in flow, wit, and consciousness through his storytelling in a way that’s poetry. Kendrick, Lupe Fiasco, and Kid Cudi have all credited his sound.
And on June 23rd, we see them both for one night in Seattle. Get on it.
