Showcasing artists whose work have appeared on hit TV shows to families who create art together, the self-guided Edmonds Art Studio Tour has been a staple of the city since 2006. And nearly two decades after the inaugural tour, seven of the founding artists still participate.

Run by an all-volunteer committee of local artists, the tour lets you peer into private artist studios typically closed to the public. This year, 38 local artists will showcase their work at 18 studios in the Edmonds area. Visitors can watch the artists as they work their magic to create new pieces, purchase handmade local art, and simply converse with the artists and ask questions to learn more about their work and the inspiration behind it.

The diverse roster of artists includes painter d’Elaine Johnson, who hasnā€™t let age slow her down. Now in her 90s, Johnson remains active in both creating art and participating in the tour. Chris Minor, whose lino-cut prints were used on the set of Criminal Minds in 2018, will also showcase his work this yearā€”and, in fact, he was ā€œdiscoveredā€ in downtown Edmonds by a set designer of Criminal Minds, who ended up using four of Minorā€™s prints on the show.

The tour is a family affair for quite a few participating artists, including Minor, whose wife Katherine St. Martin-Minor shares a studio space with him. Joel and Lori Soderberg, a married couple who specialize in glass art, collaborate on every piece they create. There are also sisters and ceramic artists Barb Goodfellow Childs and Molly Goodfellow Winton, who show their work in the same studioā€”Kate Shinn, Childsā€™ daughter will also display her multidisciplinary art there.

Bring an art-loving friend, take your time, and make a day out of it. There are plenty of studios to explore.

Presented by the Edmonds Arts Festival, the tour is funded in part by the City of Edmonds Arts Commission Tourism Promotion Fund through City of Edmonds Lodging Tax funds.

The Edmonds Art Studio Tour works to increase the visibility of the arts and artists in Edmonds.
