We’ve all wanted to eat books. No, not like that. I don’t have pica. What I mean is that you’ll be reading a passage from a book and want to jump into the story and join the feast. Books like ā€œCharlie and the Chocolate Factory,ā€ or ā€œLike Water for Chocolateā€ or ā€œChocolat.ā€ (Sorry, my advent calendar has turned me into a chocolate fiend). Unfortunately, we haven’t invented the science to do that yet, so the next best thing is to come to the third annual Edible Book Festival in Lake Forest Park, just four minutes past Seattle’s northern border.

What the heck does this mean? People from all over the area will be entering food based on their favorite book. Easy, right? Sure, many people default to cake, but your inspiration can take on many forms. As long as it’s edible and related to literature, go nuts! Or go fruit! Or make a tower out of tortilla chips and Takis! I don’t know your life or your taste in literature.

There will be a quartet of judges handing out certificates for such things as ā€œMost PUNderfulā€ and ā€œMost Book-Likeā€ in three artist categories: Elementary School, Middle/High School and Everybody Else. Also, if you’re very proud of your design and want to preserve it, you don’t necessarily have to share it with the public. Skater’s choice!

I’ll get you started off with some free ideas:

ā³ ā€œDune:ā€ A spiced coffee cake topped with sugar sand and a worm breaching its surface.

🪨 ā€œWuthering Heights:ā€ An earthy, chocolate cake in the shape of the moor with a meticulously crafted gingerbread version of Wuthering Heights and marzipan craggy rocks.

šŸ° ā€œDivine Comedy:ā€ A multitiered cake representing each layer of hell.
