Dawn of the Dead is, for my money at least (and I know for many others!), the greatest zombie movie ever made,” says Grand Illusion Cinema lead programmer Trevor Brandt. Count me in as one of the faithful. I’ll also offer that it’s the best movie set at a mall. (As in movies where a mall is its main setting as opposed to ones having major sequences set at a mall; otherwise, I’ll just talk your ear off about Clueless for weeks.)

But why now? It’s not just that George Romero’s whip-smart and imperatively violent consumerism satire, about a band of survivors building a mini-society in a shopping center as chaos rages on in the world outside its walls, remains frustratingly relevant well into the new century. Nay, this brand-new restoration is making its way around theaters in celebration of 45 years since its North American premiere in Pittsburgh. And save for an occasional Fathom Event, the movie has been unavailable to book for years.

Since the Grand Illusion prides itself on a stream of cult film revivals mixed in with their modern arthouse fare, the booking fits nicely into the theater’s 20th Anniversary Celebration Series in honor of two full decades as a volunteer-run nonprofit organization. And in even more fun horror flick news, they’ll be showing Romero’s The Crazies a week earlier, roughly the same time Northwest Film Forum screens Creepshow, making a semi-formal “Romero Roundup” series between the two indie houses.
