What’s the story, morning glory? 📞 From Sweet Apple suburbia to Seattle, the phone lines are all tied up to share the news that a pair of teen idol hips are swinging into our fair city. That’s right: Conrad Birdie is coming to give one lucky fan a seriously high-profile smooch as “Bye Bye Birdie” takes to The 5th’s stage this June.
The Tony Award-winning musical comedy, with music and lyrics by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams and a book by Michael Stewart, first opened on Broadway in 1960. The successful show kick-started a West End production, numerous revivals and a cinematic masterpiece starring Dyke Van Dyke, Janet Leigh and Ann-Margret in 1963.
Based loosely on the peanut butter-and-banana-sandwich-loving Elvis Presley, “Bye Bye Birdie” covers the exploits of rock-n-roll sensation Conrad Birdie and his fanatic, largely female fanbase. After Birdie gets drafted into the army, he has one last performance to air on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and comes in hot to Sweet Apple, Ohio to find the kiss-winning member of his fan club, Kim MacAfee, and seriously disrupt the idyllic status quo of the small town.
Candy-coated and bursting with spectacular charm, “Bye Bye Birdie” has never before been seen on The 5th Avenue Theatre’s stage. This hip-swinging, high-energy, rock-n-roll, show-stopping gem of the musical theater canon will truly knock your socks off.
The 5th is a nonprofit theater company spreading the joy of musicals with people all across our region and state.
