For decades, Bumbershoot always marked the proverbial end of Seattle summer every Labor Day weekend. But over the past three years, the music and arts festival has been on a hiatus as it underwent significant retoolingânamely, production of the event shifting from conglomerate AEG to locally-based New Rising Sun. Now, just in time for its 50th anniversary, Bumbershoot is back in a big way at Seattle Center.

Returning to Bumbershoot’s community roots, there’ll be a glut of programming across the arts. Large-scale art installations will be throughout the Seattle Center campus. Additionally, Bumbershoot 2023 welcomes the return of Out of Sight, a survey of contemporary PNW art featuring dozens of local artists. Twenty local restaurants, including Musang and Neon Taco, will be on deck to fill bellies with delicious foodâfood you can munch on while getting your tarot cards read at an on-site Witch Temple. And how can I forget the “Recess District“? This new area will feature Roll Around Seatown, a pole dancing program from The AERO Space and Ascendance Studios, as well as BUMBERMANIA!, a performance curated by Grit City Wrestling School.
And, duh, music! The curation this year brings national acts like rockers Sleater-Kinney, emo rockers Sunny Day Real Estate, and a sunset performance from electro cumbia band Bomba EstĂ©reo. There’ll also be a bevy of excellent local acts, including the gritty The Black Tones, indie rock project Spirit Award, deejay and producer Chong the Nomad, and West Seattle quartet THEM.
